If you thought buying a mattress was difficult, trying buying a mattress online. The mattress world is huge. Here are some tips for how to navigate it and a little bit about the mattress my wife and I bought online. We absolutely love it.
If you and your spouse are getting married, there’s a good chance that you are (or will be) on the market for the right mattress.
Get ready because the mattress world is massive. It’s very easy to get lost in. And, perhaps worst of all, you’re now essentially limited to making this choice from your computer—not the comfy top of the mattress in the store.
My wife and I did what originally felt like the worst idea ever: we purchased our mattress online.
Didn’t try it out.
Didn’t see it in person.
Couldn’t feel it.
Instead, we took a risk. The risk wasn’t so bad, though, because return policies are amazing. But who wants to go through a return process for a mattress? And what are you supposed to sleep on while you wait for your new one since your old one was likely lugged away?
Lots of concerns, lots of worries. I want to put these concerns and worries to rest by giving you some tips for buying the right mattress online. I’ll also tell you all about the wonders of our current mattress: the Perfect Sleeper Kleinmon II.
Okay, step one.
My first idea for buying a mattress was to go through Costco. I think Costco is amazing, an avid member, but it turned out not to be the greatest spot for a mattress.
This isn’t to say that you can’t find something affordable and quality there—you certainly might be able to.
It’s just to say that there are better options.
And how’d I come to learn this? I read the reviews. This is buying-online 101 and it’s absolutely crucial to the process.
Be weary, however: we can’t always go off of reviews alone. Some reviews seem obviously placed by the merchant; others are clearly the result of customers trying to wreak havoc on a business. So, read carefully.
After you read some reviews, here’s the next crucial step to buying the right mattress online.
With such a large and presumably expensive purchase, you want to be very acquainted with the business’s return policy.
What’s beautiful is that a lot of businesses these days have pretty generous return policies, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As I mentioned earlier, my wife and I went with the Perfect Sleeper Kleinmon II, 13.75 inches with the firm pillow top. It’s absolutely incredible. I’ll say more about it in a bit, but part of what gave me peace was the return policy.
We went through Macy’s where we were given 120 days to return our mattress. There are some fees associated with the return process, so here comes step number three.
Buying a mattress can be a big decision. Generally they can be expensive and the delivery/return process is not as simple as a small desk lamp.
For that reason, take your time when looking for the right mattress and read the fine print.
Things to look for:
It can be cumbersome, but when we’re talking about a product that you will literally spend a third of your life laying on, you should take your time.
Try to resist the impulse to make a rash decision and instead do a little research! I believe this is the way to buy the right mattress online.
Now, for a little bit about the mattress my wife and I chose!
When I started looking for a mattress, I really didn’t know where to start. All I knew is that we wanted a king size and we wanted medium firmness.
Search for that and you’ll get thousands of results.
Part of how I started to narrow options down was setting a price range. We didn’t want to spend more than $1200. We got very lucky because mattress prices, at the time of our purchase, were down quite a bit.
So, $1200 was an easy box to check.
Next, I wanted a known brand and I didn’t want memory foam. One of my good friends was avid proponent of 100% memory foam mattresses three years ago when he bought his, but now he can’t stand it.
In fact, just today I sold him on the mattress my wife and I bought.
With the known brand requirement, I was led to Serta very quick. Part of what sold me on them was their selection, commitment to quality, and their informational videos on YouTube describing the different mattresses.
The Perfect Sleeper Kleinmon II, 13.75 inch with firm pillow top was our choice. It included a low profile foundation, was rated at medium firmness (it truly is the perfect balance between not too firm and not too plush), and includes a layer of memory gel foam.
It’s most composed of individually wrapped coils—exactly what we were looking for. By individual wrapping the coils, it reduces felt movement in the bed when your partner moves. It checks out.
We’re somewhere between 60-90 sleeps in and we have zero intention of returning it. We love it.
